How To Look Slimmer Instantly

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Did you know that the clothing styles you choose can have a major impact on your apparent weight? Choosing the right clothes for your body shape and makes all the difference. Here are 10 simple tricks you can use to look slimmer almost instantly!

You can lose approximately 3-5 lbs (1-2kgs) with each point listed below. Choose a maximum of 5 points per outfit:

1. Vertical Lines

A vertical design line that causes the eye to run uninterrupted up and down the body has an incredible power to make you appear slimmer and taller. Vertical stripes in particular are great at making you appear slimmer, but be careful with the stripes you choose. The wider the stripe and the further apart they are spaced, the less impact they have. Thin to medium stripes placed close together have the most impact.

2. Stand Up Straight

Simple good posture will always make you appear slimmer. Standing correctly makes your clothes hang properly and elongates the body. This can take practice but it is a great habit to get into, both for your appearance and your health.

3. Underwear

Wearing great foundation garments will help to keep everything firm and in place. Just wearing the correct size and style of bra for your body can do wonders, so get professionally fitted at least once a year or more often if you are losing or gaining weight, pregnant or breastfeeding. Also, wearing a light, loose camisole under your clothes can help to hide stomach rolls.

4. Colour

Wearing dark colours over a figure challenge can help to visually reduce your size. It doesn’t have to be black; charcoal, navy and chocolate all work well too. Just make sure the colour that is framing your face comes from your best colour palette. There is no point looking slimmer if you also look washed out and tired.

If you are short, wearing dark colours on the lower half of your body can give the appearance of extra height. Keeping colour contrast to a minimum also helps, so if you wear skirts, choose hosiery that gently blends in colour with your shoes and hemline.

5. Fabric

As a general rule you want to avoid wearing bulky, textured fabrics over your largest area. Instead, choose fine to medium textured fabrics that drape and skim over your body, rather than cling. Also remember to choose matte (non-shiny) fabrics. Shiny fabrics like satin catch the light and will show up every lump and bump.

6. Shape

Lots of women go for very loose clothing with the hope of hiding extra weight. This can have the opposite affect and make you appear larger than you actually are. Instead choose clothes with some shape and make the most of your figure.

7. Accessories

Wearing an accessory high on your body can be a great way to attract attention away from a figure challenge. A scarf, brooch or great earrings can act as a focal point, drawing the eye up to your face. Always choose medium sized accessories - anything chunky can add weight and anything too fine will disappear.

8. Prints & Patterns

If you are overweight chances are you avoid prints and patterns, however you can wear them successfully. Always choose prints with a dark rather than light background. You should also choose prints where the repeat is not obvious and there is very little or no background colour showing. This will confuse the eye and visually reduce weight.

9. Shoes

The chunkier the shoe and more rounded the toe, the heavier you will appear. The best shoes for reducing apparent weight have a thin sole, medium to high heel and reasonably pointed toe. Stay away from mules and ankle straps, instead go for shoes that show more of your foot, creating a long line and visually elongating your legs.

10. Simplicity

Above all, keep your total appearance simple and elegant.

A personal image consultation will show you exactly which colours and styles of clothes are right for you, but these simple tricks will help to you look slimmer, instantly!

Caring for the Orphaned Foal

Monday, April 21st, 2008

There’s nothing worse than looking forward to the arrival of a well-bred foal, only to lose the mare during the birthing process. While raising a foal orphaned at birth can be extremely challenging, there are ways to up the odds of the foal surviving to become a productive member of equine society.

The Importance of Colostrum

The first task at hand should be ensuring that the foal gets a sufficient amount of colostrum. Colostrum, which is the mare’s first milk, is loaded with disease-and infection-fighting antibodies. Because mares don’t pass antibodies to their foals during pregnancy, adequate colostrum consumption is necessary for the newborn to be protected against disease.

About 12 hours after birth gastrointestinal absorption of colostrum begins to decrease, and absorption is only minimal after 24 hours. Colostrum can be bottle fed the orphaned foal, or given via stomach tube by a vet. Ideally, two or three liters of colostrum should be divided into three or four doses, which should be given at hourly intervals.

Where do you get colostrum? First of all, if a mare is at risk of dying, colostrum should be harvested. In addtion, breeders should always collect a little extra from foaling mares to have on hand in emergencies, providing the mare has enough colostrum. In most cases, about 200 to 500 ml of colostrum can be milked from a mare without compromising the antibodies she passes on to her foal. The colostrum can then be frozen and used when necessary.

Nutrition

Once enough colostrum has been consumed by the foal, the next order of business is to establish a good nutrition plan. Breeders have two basic options when feeding the orphaned foal. They can (1) use a nurse mare or goat; or (2) bottle feed the foal by hand.

Because it significantly reduces the amount of labor nurse mares are always the first choice. However, nurse mares are hard to find, and even when they are found sometimes refuse to nurse the foal. A milk-producing goat can also be used with some modifications.

In most cases, a manual feeding plan is developed. These can be quite labor-intensive! In the beginning, the foal is usually fed mare’s milk, goat’s milk, or a powdered substitute. Many breeders also used tried-and-true homemade mare’s milk substitutes. Within a few weeks foals should be able to begin eating solid foods such as grain, grass, or hay.

So, how much does a foal eat? Well, you might be surprised to learn that a suckling foal can consume as much as 25 percent of its body weight per day of a milk replacer without stomach distress. These means that a 100-pound foal can consume 25 pounds-or 50 cups-of milk per day. Wow! To this end, it’s always a good idea to teach your foal to drink from a bucket. It will cut down on the amount of time you need to spend manually feeding! It’s also worth mentioning that smaller, more frequent meals are healthier for the foal than larger, less frequent meals.

General Health

It’s important to keep a close eye on the newborn’s general health, especially if mare was sick before delivery. A sick mare can sometimes result in an undernourished foal. Check to see that your foal stands, walks, and exhibits the sucking reflex within two or three hours of birth. Watch foals that appear healthy carefully to make sure they don’t deteriorate within the first 24 hours, which is not uncommon.

* * * * *

While many believe an orphaned foal’s growth and health will be compromised, this is not always the case. With proper colostrum intake, as well as a good feeding and care regimen, your foal should suffer no long-term effects.

Little House On The Prairie (Season 1) DVD Review

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

Nominated for 17 Emmys, including one Golden Globe for Best TV Series - Drama, Little House On The Prairie is one of the most popular shows in television history. Based on the autobiographical series of “Little House” books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, the show explores the inner-workings of a small town and family on the 19th Century American frontier. Director/Co-Executive Producer Michael Landon (of Bonanza and Highway to Heaven fame) also wrote one-third of the episodes (in addition to playing a lead role as the family’s father, Charles, when the actor originally cast for the part failed to show). Charles would go on to become one of the show’s most popular characters, and Little House On The Prairie would become an American favorite, boasting ten successful seasons to its credit…

Little House On The Prairie follows the lives of the Ingalls family as they settle on the banks of Plum Creek in the township of Walnut Grove, Kansas during the 1870’s. A true pioneer family, the story is seen through the eyes of the Ingalls’ middle-daughter, Laura (Melissa Gilbert), who experiences all the normal growing pains and emotions of a young girl growing up on the prairie. Carpenter Charles Ingalls (Michael Landon) and his former school teacher wife, Caroline (Karen Grassle), head up a family of three that includes two additional daughters, Mary (Melissa Sue Anderson) and Carrie (Lindsay & Sidney Greenbush). The town also includes a loveable cast of supporting characters, such as Walnut Grove School teacher Eva Beadle (Charlotte Stewart), town doctor Hiram Baker (Kevin Hagen), pastor Robert Alden (Dabbs Greer), family friend Isaiah Edwards (Victor French), the wealthy Oleson family, and a host of other characters…

The Little House On The Prairie DVD features a number of dramatic episodes including the series premiere in which the Ingalls family travels from Big Woods, Wisconsin to the more open and fertile lands of the Kansas prairie. Along the way, they make friends with Mr. Edwards (who helps them settle), have a run-in with some Indians, and fight a dangerous fire… Other notable episodes from Season 1 include “Ma’s Holiday” in which Charles and Caroline decide to go on a second honeymoon, and “Circus Man” in which a traveling salesmen tries to hoodwink the people of Walnut Grove into the notion that he possesses magic healing powers…

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

Have you ever traveled to New Zealand? If not, you are in for a treat! Auckland, New Zealand is a beautiful place to visit and a city that is large, exciting and a truly fun place to be.

Auckland, New Zealand is surrounded by the sea and lovely green forests. As you fly into Auckland you will be amazed at how fresh and green everything looks. You may notice many hills that are covered with grass that looks freshly shorn. These are the volcanic hills that are kept in shape by the sheep in the area.

You may be surprised at the city of Auckland because it has over 1 million inhabitants and has been developing in size and in sophistication over the last several years. You will find that many of the shops are now open 7 days a week and the bars and nightclubs remain open into the late hours of the night.

The cultural blend of the people in Auckland is fascinating. There is a wonderful mix of Polynesians, Asians, and Europeans. You will also find an interesting blend of activities in the city. You will see cyclists, runners and lots of people participating in water activities. There are at least 70,000 powerboats and sailing crafts in the greater Auckland area. Plan to visit one or two of the 102 beaches that are within an hour of the city.

One of the greatest assets of Auckland is the Waitemata Harbour. This name means, sea of sparkling waters and the name fits this lovely harbor. In 2000 the city held its defense of the Americas Cup and the regatta helped a major redevelopment of the area begin. Viaduct is the name of the area now and some of the citys most popular cafes, restaurants and bars are located here.

When you buy an Explorer Bus Pass you can see the city in an inexpensive and convenient way. There are stops at nine of the major attractions in the city and you can hop on or off at any of these stops.

Ready for the wilds of Auckland? Visit Mt. Eden, sip wine at a winery and then journey on to Muriwai Beach. You can spend half a day taking a tour or you also have the choice of two day-long jaunts. There are even tours that are designed for those who want a comprehensive wine-tasting experience.

The Auckland Museum is certainly worth a visit and dont leave the area without a trip to see Parnell Village. This is a place where you can shop to your hearts content at the upscale boutiques and shops. There are Victorian villas in the area, also. You will want to head up to the top of the Sky Tower for the superb view and the National Maritime Museum is lots of fun, too.

Different and fascinating? Visit Auckland!!

Seinfeld (Seasons 1 & 2) DVD Review

Friday, April 18th, 2008

The preeminent show of the 1990’s decade, Seinfeld grew from an idea of “a show about nothing” into a sacred pop culture icon - not that there’s anything wrong with that… The show follows the life of comedian Jerry Seinfeld and the exploits of his “short, quirky, bald guy” best friend, George Costanza (Jason Alexander), Jerry’s neurotic neighbor Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards), and Jerry’s ex-girlfriend Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Through the years, they’re joined by a loveable cast of characters that includes Newman, Uncle Leo, the Soup Nazi, Frank and Estelle Costanza, the Bubble Boy, and countless others…

The Seinfeld DVD (Seasons 1 & 2) offers the very first glimpse into the world Jerry, beginning with The Pilot (episode 1) which was originally titled The Seinfeld Chronicles. The first scene involves Jerry commenting to George about a button on his shirt (the same conversation later takes place in the last scene of the series finale). These opening episodes provide insight into the development of the show’s four primary characters with conversations that range from George’s initial admission that he’d like to be an architect (episode 2) to Kramer’s propensity for get rich quick schemes like a make-your-own-pizza pizzeria (episode 4). From day one, Seinfeld established itself as “must see TV,” creating such memorable episodes as “The Stock Tip,” “The Pony Remark,” “The Deal,” and “The Chinese Restaurant”.

Interestingly, in the pilot episode of Seinfeld, Elaine’s character does not yet exist, and Kramer’s character (not yet named Kramer, but Feldman) is more of an unemployed, pathetic, shut-in neighbor than the usual quirky and energetic Cosmo. Playing the role of the female in George and Jerry’s life is a wisecracking waitress named Claire (Lee Garlington) who never appears in later episodes.

Nevertheless, this initial episode exhibits the flashes of brilliance that made Seinfeld a cultural phenomenon. The show is essentially about nothing. George and Jerry do some laundry… Jerry and his neighbor watch some TV… George and Jerry have some coffee… During that time, the dominant topic of conversation is a girl that Jerry met while taking his comedy act on the road. She’s coming to stay at his place, but he doesn’t know whether he should pull out a mattress for her or not. Feldman (Kramer), George, and Jerry debate the topic endlessly until the woman arrives and Jerry learns that it’s all irrelevant because she’s engaged…

Below is a list of episodes included on the Seinfeld (Seasons 1 & 2) DVD:

Episode 1 (Pilot: Good News, Bad News) Air Date: 07-05-1989
