Mix an aging gym owner and former fight manager, an ex-champ doing menial gym tasks and a female wanna-be boxing pro and what do you get? A real bell ringer…Million Dollar Baby. Film opens with Hilary Swank seeking out Clint Eastwood for her manager. Holding off as long as possible,Clint reluctantly agrees; while warning her it’s a tough road.
An ongoing training theme was her asking to use Clint’s old punching bag. Finally, he gives in. Although Freeman’s old manager is now his boss, Clint and he fit like two fingers in a glove. Morgan was also reluctant to take on Swank as a student, but did go to the mat for her. With Clint’s guidance, Swank moves up the ring of professional female boxing, culminating in European success and a Million Dollar Las Vegas bout.
Her opponent was an early rival she defeated, but being noted for brutality and foul play. This realistically created rematch used no rose colored glasses. Swank was dealt a life threatening blow. You’ll surely want to see how this plays out. I can say,however, both Eastwood and Swank extended the emotional reach each needed See it, it won’t cost you a million, but worth you time just the same.
